Safety

Winter is Here!
By Geoffrey H. Doughty
Director of Safety & Loss Control

Winter is here, although it seems like a very cold fall. In this type of weather, many companies have block heaters for their vehicles and are plugging them in at night.

Unfortunately, we take our safety for granted so often that we don’t think much about plugging something into an outlet. Many do not realize the loss potential that worn, damaged or poorly made extension cords present to their owners or equipment. As a result, many drivers do not regularly check or report damaged or defective cords or block heater cords and plugs that could result in serious fires.

What should you look for? Examine plugs (both ends) for damage, missing or damaged prongs, scarring, blackened receptacles caused by arcing and loose connections, cuts in the insulation, etc. Check that the grounding pin is intact; if not: replace the cord or plug end. Do NOT use electrical or any other kind of tape to repair. If the damage is near enough to the end, have an electrician put on a new plug; otherwise, cut it up and throw it away. Replace the cord.

If the connection to the block heater is not tight and secure, it may not be making the required safe connection. Arcing will occur and the potential for a fire will result.

Part of every driver’s pre-trip inspection should be to inspect all extension and block heater cords for damage or signs of arcing. Reporting these is imperative. Only those cords that have the Underwriting Laboratories (UL) stamp should be used. Many are not made in the USA and are sold through chain stores at reduced cost. Don’t put your fleet at risk because of a cheap cord or block heater.

Please take a moment to advise your drivers of this requirement as we are never as safe as we think we are, and safety is one aspect of work that should never be taken for granted.

Happy New Year!
